The Steel Structure Green Building Industrial Association of Hunan Province (HSGBA) established a smart geothermal energy committee on May 21, 2021. It is Hunan’s first industrial service platform in such field, covering such clean energy sectors as geothermal, solar, air, wind, and biomass energy.
According to data of Hunan’s Shallow Geothermal Energy Development and Utilization Plan for the 13th Five-year Plan period, in the 13 cities and one prefecture of the province, the annual amount of utilizable shallow geothermal energy equals to 149 million tons of standard coals, which can satisfy heating and cooling demands of 2.9 billion sqm of buildings. As shallow geothermal heating and cooling available in less than 30 million sqm of buildings in Hunan currently, there are huge potentials for shallow geothermal resource development.
Last September, Hunan housing and urban-rural development authority and related departments jointly required to set up pilots for boosting shallow geothermal energy utilization in buildings. Between 2020 and 2023, Hunan will designate four to five pilot zones for large-scale utilization of shallow geothermal energy, to form a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient modern energy system, and explore a speedy, economical, and effective way to achieve carbon neutrality.
The five pilot projects in 2020 included the Bingshui New Town in Wangcheng District, and the Malanshan Video Cultural and Creative Park.
