The Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) announced on May 7 the national surface water quality rankings in March and the first quarter of 2019. Hunan’s Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Zhangjiajie, Yongzhou, Huaihua, and Changde cities, ranked among the top 30 in respect of the surface water quality of their national monitoring sections.

Among the top 30 national monitoring sections in surface water quality between January and March, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, with Youshui, Yuanjiang and Donghe rivers under national monitoring, ranked 8th, making Hunan’s best place on the list. Zhangjiajie, with Lishui River under national monitoring, ranked 9th; Yongzhou with Xiangjiang and Xiaoshui rivers, Huaihua with Yuanjiang, Qushui, and Wushui rivers, and Changde with Yuanjiang and Lishui rivers, and Dongting Lake, ranked 15th, 22nd and 24th respectively.

Hunan followed Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (with 9 prefecture-level cities among the top 30) and outnumbered other regions by number of cities in the top 30. There was no Hunan city in the last 30 national monitoring sections for surface water quality and water quality improvement.

Starting from the first quarter of 2019, MEE begins to announce surface water quality and water quality improvement rankings of national monitoring sections at prefecture-level and above in every quarter, to enhance local government water pollution prevention and control efforts, and further promote water environment improvement.
