Main buildings of the First Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine
Founded in 1963, the First Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine is a tertiary hospital. It was one of the seven key traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals built during the Seventh Five-Year Plan Period and was listed as a national TCM clinical research base in December 2008. It has become a fully functioning modern general hospital with good clinical efficacy and strong research and innovation capacities. The hospital is among China's top TCM hospitals in terms of TCM treatment and comprehensive capacity building. In 2017, it was selected as the construction unit of "TCM inheritance and innovation project".
In 2022, the hospital was included in the reserve list of national TCM inheritance and innovation centers and selected as a national TCM service export base. In 2023, the hospital was approved as a national demonstration center for TCM clinical teaching and training.
The hospital covers an area of 63 mu (4.2 hectares), with a total construction area of 240,000 square meters. There are 1,800 license beds, more than 1.7 million outpatient visits and nearly 70,000 annual inpatient discharges. It has established 5 national priority disciplines (acupuncture, hepatology, cardiovascularology, ophthalmology, and nursing) and 37 clinical departments and 12 medical laboratories. There are many renowned specialists and doctors in the hospital, among whom, 13 are experts enjoying the State Council Special Allowance, 30 are national senior TCM instructors, and 40 are famous TCM doctors in Hunan Province. The hospital is also a clinical teaching base of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine. There are 40 doctoral supervisors and 161 master supervisors, and 438 staff with high-grade professional titles.
