Hunan Boosts Advanced Manufacturing Engineer Collaboration

On July 23, the Industry and Information Technology Department of Hunan Province announced the first batch of 13 provincial-level Advanced Manufacturing Engineer Collaborative Innovation Centers. This initiative aims to address pressing challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), such as difficulties in attracting, retaining, and affording high-level engineers, as well as the problems in tackling and disseminating common technologies within the industry.

The first 13 centers feature three distinct strengths:

Broad coverage — The centers span new-generation secure computing, BeiDou spatiotemporal information, construction machinery, new energy, new materials, biomanufacturing, and marine engineering equipment;

University-led — Nine of the 13 centers are based at universities, leveraging academic research and talent; and,

Precise alignment — Each center is tailored to development needs of Hunan’s key industrial clusters and chains.

For instance, the Next-Generation Automated Secure Computing System Engineer Collaborative Innovation Center at the PKU-Changsha Institute for Computing and Digital Economy exemplifies the in-depth integration of top-tier universities with local industries. Changsha is a national hub for the next-generation automated secure computing systems industry. Leveraging Peking University's research and talent strengths, and focusing on building a domestic computing ecosystem, the center will provide high-level talent support for the automated secure computing industrial chain in Hunan and across the nation.

The Construction Machinery Engineer Collaborative Innovation Center at Hunan Industry Polytechnic demonstrates the "vocational education + leading enterprise" industry-education integration. Hunan is a hub for the construction machinery industry. Leveraging the polytechnic's cooperation with Zoomlion, the center has jointly established an industrial college and R&D platforms that directly serve production, offering a replicable solution to address the shortage of engineers faced by SMEs.

The selection of these centers aims to share high-level engineering talent with SMEs through flexible talent introduction and project-based collaboration, thereby reducing their talent acquisition costs. The selection also aims to establish platforms to tackle common technical challenges, accelerating industrial application of lab results.
