China-assisted agricultural machinery roars as it works in the cotton fields of Benin, Africa, precisely planting cotton seeds one by one as the seeder advances. This is a typical scene from the implementation of China's technical assistance project for cotton production in Benin. Shou Xiaoyong, an aid worker from Yanling, Zhuzhou, has been involved in this project since 2017. Over the past seven years, he has helped promote the modernization of the local cotton industry.
To address challenges in Benin's cotton production—including outdated cultivation techniques, limited crop diversity, and fragile ecosystems—the project team introduced adapted cotton varieties and agricultural machinery while publicizing scientific planting methods. By establishing a "project team + base + cooperative + farmer" model, Shou Xiaoyong and his team delivered technology directly to the fields. This approach has steadily increased cotton yields per unit area, enabling many cotton farmers to build new homes and purchase motorcycles, significantly improving their livelihoods.

After assuming the role of team leader in 2022, Shou Xiaoyong further expanded the scope of technical training. Collaborating with multiple local universities, he provided young people with skills training in agricultural machinery operation and maintenance, injecting new vitality into Benin's agricultural sector.

Beyond agricultural cooperation, Shou Xiaoyong has also actively pushed forward cultural exchanges between China and Benin. In 2024, he initiated and organized the inaugural "Village Super League" in Benin, attracting participation from 12 village teams. The tournament incorporated Chinese elements, serving as a platform for sharing the spirit of sportsmanship and deepening grassroots friendships, which was widely welcomed by local residents.
For seven years, Shou Xiaoyong has steadfastly brought Chinese technology and culture to Benin with an attitude of sincerity, warmth, and genuine friendship. His efforts have not only advanced the cotton industry but also built a solid bridge of friendship between the two peoples.
