Little swans fluttering and soaring high above Qixing Lake Waters of the Dongting Lake.

The State Forestry Administration and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) jointly initiated a survey of winter aquatic birds around the Dongting Lake on January 13, 2015.

The 4-day survey covered the East Dongting Lake, the state-level nature reserve of West Dongting Lake, the South Dongting Lake, and the provincial-level nature reserve of Hengling Lake. The survey also attracted volunteers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Forestry University, Hunan University and Yueyang Finless Porpoise Protection Association. More than 80 participants were divided into 9 teams so as to carry out sentine surveillance to count the number of bird categories and observe the activities of birds.
