The city of Huaihua is located in the southwestern part of Hunan Province. It is "the Dong Culture Tourism Zone of China", with Dong culture tours in the lead, and the tours of scenic spots, historic sites, and forest resorts as the important content.

Ancient Trade City of Hongjiang

The ancient trade city in the Hongjiang Administrative District of Huaihua features classic residential buildings of the south of Yangtze River, which present a living copy of the painting "Riverside Scenes on the Pure Bright Festival". As one of the "Eight New Grand Sights in Hunan Province", the ancient trade city has been listed as a key cultural unit under state protection.

It was formed in late Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and built on the riverbank. There are residences scattered along the maze of lanes and streets. More than two thousand old buildings are still extant, through which the bygone days of this prosperous commercial town can be faintly seen.

Dong Cultural Village

As one of the numerous ethnic groups living in southwest China, the Dong Ethnic Group has a unique cultural tradition of its own. The history of the Dong Ethnic Group dates back to the Baiyue Ethnic Group in ancient China. As early as the Tang and Song dynasties, this ethnic group came to settle down and lived in the border regions of today's Hunan and Guizhou provinces as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

According to legend, the king of ancient Yelang Kingdom passed this place and was attracted by its full-bodied lifestyle and folk customs. He built a "Huangdu" (royal city) city here. Dong Cultural Village of Huangdu is composed of four villages: Touzhai, Weizhai, Xinzhai, and Panzhai. In the drum tower, arbor and along the roofed bridge, one can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as music. To go to the Dong village, one has to pass a roofed bridge at first, which is called Puxiu Bridge. The door of the village is located at the foot of the mountain and to the bank of the river. Six iron cannons salute one after another. Dozens of men of Dong ethnic group play Lusheng music and dance there. In the festival full-dress, beautiful girls of Dong ethnic group take the local wine and wait for guests at the way. That is the most ceremonious amenity for Dong people to welcome guests. Going to the performance ground decorated with sun-flower design, one can enjoy the wonderful performance of the Art Group of the cultural village. The programs include "Toast Song", "Chechemo", "Trample Dustpan", "Hegan Song", "Tea", "Grab Egg", "Stool Ballad" and so on, which embody the essence of the traditional culture of Dong ethnic group.

As a unique architectural achievement and a masterpiece of talented creation, these villages are of great value for scientific study. The Dong culture kept here is the most authentic and integral. The Dong music, for instance, is representative of the Dong culture. The multipart Dong Grand Song, for instance, has been recorded in the early documents. The phenomena of the primitive culture kept in these villages are of outstanding universal value.
