Hunan Sees Nearly 76 Million Tourist Trips in Q1

The Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism released data on the province's cultural tourism market in the first quarter on April 12. From January to March, 416 tourist attractions under provincial monitoring saw nearly 76 million tourist trips, a year-on-year growth of 104.04%.

Hunan's tourism industry saw a robust recovery thanks to the concerted efforts made by 13 cities and one prefecture. Supported by the optimized COVID-19 response and driven by the first Tourism Development Conference of Hunan Province, Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Tianmen Mountain, Grand Canyon, and Maoyan River in Zhangjiajie City received more than 2.24 million visits, an increase of 28.88% from the pre-epidemic level in 2019 and an increase of 418.34% from the level in 2022. Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, adjacent to Zhangjiajie, reported strong results, with tourist arrivals reaching nearly 12 million at the end of March.

Travel agencies experienced a surge in domestic tourists, as well as outbound and inbound tourists. In the first quarter, 108 travel agencies under monitoring received 368,600 domestic tourist arrivals and 1,346 inbound tourist arrivals, an increase of 556.25% and 402.24% year on year, respectively. The outbound tourist trips organized by the travel services rose 7341.4% to 11,683.

The return of tourists promoted the rebound of the hotel and lodging industry. According to data from the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, 557 accommodation businesses under monitoring received more than 6.05 million visits, up by 31.37%. A total of 188 museums, libraries, and cultural centers under monitoring received over 23.73 million visitor arrivals, up by 91.35%.
