Tourism Industry

Located in the south central part of the Chinese mainland, Hunan has long been known for its natural beauty. Its mixture of mountains and water makes it among the most beautiful provinces in China. As the cradle of Huxiang Culture, Hunan boasts profound cultural deposits and abundant sites of historic significance and cultural heritages, which attract tourists from all over the world.

Hunan has achieved remarkable progress over the past decade in cultural and tourism development. The all-for-one tourism strategy has been implemented, and tourism has become a new engine for economic growth. At present, Hunan Province has 2 world natural heritage sites, 2 global geoparks, 7 all-for-one tourism demonstration areas (ranking 7th nationwide), 11 national 5A-level tourist attractions, and 151 national 4A-level tourist attractions. Hunan Province's total tourism revenue saw an average annual growth rate of 19.3% over the past decade. The province's total tourism revenue will reach 1.3 trillion yuan by 2025.

Culture and tourism have made important contributions to poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. Thirteen high-quality travel routes were planned and constructed in poverty-stricken areas of Wuling, Xuefeng and Luoxiao mountains, driving the development of 689 villages and building 55 typical cases of poverty alleviation through tourism. Through tourism development, more than 1 million people in the province has been lifted out of poverty in direct or indirect way.

Science & Technology

Since the 18th CPC National Congress, Hunan's rankings in the comprehensive strength in innovation has ascended to 11th nationwide, and that in the comprehensive enterprise innovation index rose to 8th.

Hunan has obtained 201 national sci-tech awards, with a number of core technologies taking the lead in the world. Since 2012, breakthroughs were made in 289 core technologies in the "Three Hubs and Four New Missions" key sci-tech innovation projects. Iconic achievements had been made in super hybrid rice, supercomputer of the Tianhe series, traction technology for ultra-high-speed rail transit, and in the deep space, deep earth, and deep sea explorations including Beidou Satellite, "Hainiu II" deep-water drilling machine, "Jing Hua" super-sized shield tunneling machine, and "Deep Sea No.1" subsea trenching machine.

The construction of higher-level innovation platforms has been accelerated. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the number of Hunan's national and provincial-level sci-tech innovation platforms doubled to reach 1,676. There are 19 national key laboratories, 14 national engineering and technological research centers, and 12 national engineering research centers. Besides, the construction of the Yuelu Mountain Laboratory, Yuelu Mountain Industrial innovation Center, Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Furong Laboratory are progressing.

New strides have been made in building the talent centers of national importance. The provincial funds for sci-tech talent projects increased by 9 times. The provincial natural science funds expanded for 6 times, which have offered supports for more than 16,000 outstanding researchers' basic research. Twenty-six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering were co-opted, and the number of the academicians in Hunan reached 42 in total. The national and provincial high-level sci-tech talents amounted to 3,100, quadrupled that of decade ago.

Finance, Banking, and Insurance


Hunan’s total fiscal revenue reached 300.87 billion yuan, up by 0.1% compared with the previous year. Of the total, tax revenue and non-tax revenue reached 205.8 billion yuan, a 0.2% decrease; and, 95.07 billion yuan, a 0.6% increase. Of the tax revenue, domestic added-value tax was 70.06 billion yuan, down by 11.3% over the previous year; and, the corporate income tax was 25.6 billion yuan, increasing by 3.6%. The general public budget expenditure was 840.27 billion yuan, an increase of 4.6%. Among them, education expenditure was 132.52 billion yuan, up 4.3%; social security and employment expenditures 130.76 billion yuan, increasing by 12.7%; health expenditure 73.66 billion yuan, grew by 11.3%; science and technology expenditure 23.41 billion yuan, an increase of 36.2%; and, housing security expenditure 24.47 billion yuan, up 14.5%.

Savings deposits in RMB and foreign currencies in all items of financial institutions totaled 5,791.2 billion yuan at the end of the year, an increase of 10% compared with that at the end of the previous year. Of the total, savings deposit of households was 3,186.91 billion yuan, up 12.2%; and, that of non-financial enterprises was 1,345.64 billion yuan, up 3.1% year one year. The balance of various domestic and foreign currency loans was 4,940.28 billion yuan, an increase of 16.5%. Of the total, loans for households, and loans for non-financial enterprises, government agencies and organizations were 1,839.23 billion yuan and 3,096.59 billion yuan, up by 17.1% and 16.3% respectively.

There were 117 domestic A-share listed companies in Hunan Province by the end of 2020. The direct financing of the province totaled 467.44 billion yuan, up by 51.1%. The total market value of A-share listed companies was 1,753.32 billion yuan, an increase of 77.7%. At the end of the year, there were 436 securities company business departments, 1 less than the previous year. The annual securities transaction volume was 10,486.36 billion yuan, an increase of 91.5%. There were 3 futures companies in Hunan Province, the same as last year. Their annual turnover was 6,427.59 billion yuan, up 42.0%.

The premium received by the insurance companies totaled 151.31 billion yuan in 2020, up by 8.4% over the previous year. Of the total, the premiums of life insurance, health insurance, accident insurance and property insurance were 76.08 billion yuan, a 7.2% increase; 30.37 billion yuan, an increase of 19.8%; 3.97 billion yuan, an increase of 12.4%; and, 40.89 billion yuan, up 2.8% respectively. Meanwhile, insurance companies paid an indemnity worth 48.24 billion yuan, growing by 13.8%.
