Profile of Ethnic Groups in Hunan

Hunan is a multiethnic home to the Han nationality and other 55 ethnic groups. According to the 7th nationwide population census conducted in 2020, the population of these 55 ethnic groups in Hunan Province amounted to 6.6852 million, accounting for 10.06% of the total population.

Ethnic groups are residents in all cities, prefecture, counties, and districts of Hunan Province. Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Huaihua, and Zhangjiajie each have populations of more than one million ethnic residents, while Yongzhou, Shaoyang, Changde, and Changsha each have more than 100,000 ethnic residents.

Autonomous prefecture, counties, or townships have been specifically established for the  Tujia, Miao, Dong, Yao, Bai, Hui, Zhuang, and Uyghur ethnic groups, who have inhabited in Hunan for generations.
