The Ceremony of Chinese Government Friendship Award 2016 was held in Beijing recently. Timothy R. Billiar, a foreign candidate of China’s “Thousand Talents Program” employed by the Central South University, won the award. To date, Hunan has 30 foreign experts gaining such honor.

Prof. Billiar is now teaching at the Medical Center for Vascular Disease Clinic Transformation of the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University (CSU) as a doctoral supervisor. He is an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A., and head of the surgical department of University of Pittsburgh, who won the Medallion Award, top honor in the US medical science circle.

Prof. Billiar has made remarkable contributions to Chinese medical science development, as well as China-USA cooperation in the field. He, with his Chinese colleagues, pioneered in the research of immunity dysfunction and regulation in trauma and shock, which greatly inspired corresponding treatment strategy and new therapy in China.

He assisted the Third Xiangya Hospital to develop its clinic medical laboratories, guided animal experiments on sepsis and inflammation immunity, and facilitated cooperation in vascular injury repair and biomarker research. Beyond that, he joined hand with Prof. Chen Fengyuan to found the medical center for vascular disease clinic transformation, accomplishing several innovative achievements.

First conferred in 1991, the Friendship Award is the government's top honor for foreigners working in China. Every year, 50 winners would be awarded.
