Liling porcelain production began in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220), rose in the Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1271–1368) Dynasties, and flourished in the late Qing Dynasty (1840–1912), with a history of nearly two thousand years to date. In 2007, Liling porcelain was included in the list of national geographical indication (GI) products. In 2024, Liling porcelain was approved for the construction of a provincial-level GI product protection demonstration zone. Focusing on the goals of "high-standard construction, high-level protection, and high-quality development," the local authority has taken the construction of the GI product protection demonstration zone as a key lever to continuously promote the branding, standardization, and integrated development of the Liling porcelain industry.
By the end of 2025, the number of porcelain-related businesses above designated size across Liling City reached 345, generating an output value of 34.938 billion CNY, and the total output value of the industrial cluster exceeded 50 billion CNY. The Liling porcelain industry has created more than 200,000 jobs in over 200 villages across 19 towns and townships across the city.
Liling porcelain ranked fourth in the 2025 national top 100 GI products with economic and social comprehensive value, and ranked second among the national top 100 counties in the comprehensive index of high-quality development of county-level GI industries, standing first in Hunan Province.
