The Hunan Department of Transportation announced on July 29 that, 5G-based smart expressway project will launch in Hunan. The first 113-km expressway sections in the project include the northwest and southwest sections of the Changsha Belt Expressway, and the extension and modification section of the Changsha-Yiyang Expressway. These sections will improve the intellectualization and networking system.
The 5G-based smart expressway project is based on the new-generation internet technologies, such as cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI). The project would make it possible to gather precise and real-time traffic information about every section, vehicle, and structure.
According to the Changsha-Yiyang Expressway extension and modification project manager, the section is preparing for 5G device installation, and coordinates with related departments to start signal testing. 5G service will be available across the whole section after its opening to traffic. The 5G network promises faster speeds, less lag, when connecting to the network, or making phone calls, and will support unmanned driving.
At present, Hubei and Guangxi are also developing such 5G-based smart expressway projects.
Hunan will upgrade highway infrastructure with IVICS (Intelligent Vehicle Infrastructure Cooperative System), in a bid to improve traffic management and service, and boost development of unmanned driving and intelligent transportation supporting industry.
