Mawangdui Han Dynasty tombs were discovered in last century and praised as the 8th Archaeological Wonders. There are over 300 archaeological relics which mainly reflect policy, economy, culture, art and science of China in Han Dynasty. According to principle of equally emphasizing on both protection and utilization, the Project intends to create an international tourism brand which enjoys equal fame with Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in Xi’an and develop Mawangdui new Han Dynasty city with Han characteristics specialized in tour, culture, leisure and shopping so as to make full use of it in economic and social development. According to the preliminary plan, it covers a construction area of 13.33 hectare with excellent location from Beijing-Guangzhou Railway in the west, Yuanda Road in the south, Liuyang River in the northeast. The 1st phase of the Project is core protection area. The government is responsible for constructing Mawangdui Relic Park with Mawangdui Han Dynasty tombs as centre. The 2nd phase is around Mawangdui Relic Park. It intends to develop and construct Mawangdui old Han Dynasty city. Through marketing operation, it will become a historic and cultural resort specialized in developing and marketing leisure, amusement, catering, restaurants, culture, communication and tourism products.
Prophase Work of the Project: Provincial and municipal authorities for cultural relics are managing to realize “transferring historical relics of Mawangdui to the site” and declare world cultural heritage. “Protection Program of Changsha Historic and Cultural City” has ranked construction of Mawangdui into key program project. Municipal planning authorities are formulating detailed control regulations for developing and constructing Mawangdui Han Dynasty tombs.
