A symposium on the system for ecosystem carbon sink monitoring of Hunan Province is held in Changsha.

A symposium on the system for ecosystem carbon sink monitoring  of Hunan Province was held in Changsha on February 10, 2022. The theme was “building a system for ecosystem carbon sink monitoring based on the natural resource survey and monitoring system”. Gong Jianya, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a keynote speech. More than 20 experts from Wuhan University, Central South University, Hunan University, and 508 Institute of  the Fifth Academy of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, who are specialized in carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, discussed latest research on carbon sink monitoring, and gave advises for following development.

In recent years, the Hunan Department of Natural Resources has paid high attention to the development of the system for ecosystem carbon sink monitoring. It collaborated with research institutions such as Wuhan University, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and Hunan University of Science and Technology, and took the lead nationwide in establishing a laboratory of ecosystem carbon sink monitoring. Based on its advantages in national land resource survey, and remote sensing data and technology, it has explored categorization of carbon sink monitoring objects, conducted research on carbon sink monitoring technology and models, and coordinated and developed the system for ecosystem carbon sink monitoring based on natural resource survey system.

With the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Central Park as a pilot area, the 2nd Surveying and Mapping Institute of Hunan Province is conducting background surveys on carbon sinks, assessments of carbon storage, monitoring of carbon sink changes, and GEP (gross ecosystem production) in mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands and deserts, which would lay a foundation for overall carbon sink monitoring. The technical team of the Ministry of Natural Resources will include Hunan Province into the first batch of national pilot provinces for the research on carbon sink monitoring technology system.

According to Xie Wen, deputy director of the Hunan Department of Natural Resources, the department will firmly follow the spirit and consideration of the central government to carry out the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality work. It will accelerate construction and application of the system for ecosystem carbon sink monitoring based on the natural resource survey and monitoring system, so as to contribute to achieving the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals in Hunan Province and the whole country.
