The 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) started its first-phase session in Kunming, Yunnan Province, on October 11, 2021. Hunan Province actively participated in the meeting, and introduced its achievements in biodiversity conservation to the world.

Themed "Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth," COP15 is the first global conference convened by the United Nations highlighting ecological civilization, a philosophy proposed by China.

The meeting is set to be held in two parts. The first part, scheduled for Oct. 11 to 15, is held both offline and online.

Representatives are expected to focus on the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework to guide conservation actions worldwide through 2030.

Hunan representatives will attend several ecological civilization forums on tackling climate changes and protecting biodiversity conservation. They will present Hunan’s achievements in biodiversity conservation to the world at the meeting. Hunan will continue to practice the principle that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets, and push forward biodiversity conservation work. Hunan has been striving to build a modernized new Hunan featuring harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and make contributions to fulfilling the targets of COP 15.

Hunan forestry authority recently issued a white paper on Hunan’s progress and achievements in biodiversity conservation since 2005. It was Hunan’s first, and also China’s first provincial-level, white paper on this theme.
