The 2019 “Wetland Ambassador Action” program officially opened in Changsha on July 13, 2019. Themed on “status, opportunities and challenges of wetlands conservation along the Yangtze River”, it was co-sponsored by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Three-River-Source National Park Administration. College students from 15 universities all over the country attended the opening ceremony. They will receive a three-day special training in project design, implementation, publicity, and filming.

The “Wetland Ambassador Action” program is a large-scale event initiated by WWF in 2001 for university environmental protection associations. It systematically conducts wetland science and technology popularization activities throughout the country, to popularize wetland knowledge, encourage public participation in wetland protection, and improve wetland protection consciousness.

The 2019 program will focus on the Yangtze River. The ambassadors are supposed to go deep into the wetlands of the Yangtze River basin to investigate and learn the opportunities and challenges of current wetland protection.

It was learnt that, as of 2019, the program has been held for fifteen sessions, and 532 college student environmental protection organizations have participated in the bidding, and 306 of them have won the bid to become “wetland ambassadors”. It has attracted more than 5,300 teachers and students to carry out over 400 research and promotional activities along the Heilongjiang, Yangtze, and Yellow rivers.
