Recently the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Central Civilization Office announced the 2019 Top 100 Most Dedicated Eco-environment Protection Volunteers, which is part of the program of “Beautiful China, I am doing my part”. Five of them were from Hunan Province.

Those named were:
-Tao Guiping, member of Changsha Qingshanlvshui Environmental Protection Volunteers Association;
-Zhu Shuojie, member of Rucheng County Volunteers Association and Hunan Green Guardian Rucheng Brigade;
-Zeng Chenxi, Changsha First High School student;
-Tan Dunshuang, villager of Pengjiachang Village, Mengxi Town, Lixian County; and,
-Zhang jianwei, member of Changsha Yuhua Dongjian Public Welfare Cultural Development Center in Yuhua District.

In 2008, Tao Guiping launched an action to protect green mountains and clear water in Liuyang with self-raised funds of 30,000 CNY. In 2012, the Changsha Qingshanlvshui Environmental Protection Volunteers Association was established. Over the past decade, she has led association members into street shops, residential areas, alleys, and rural mountains, and successfully encouraged more than 3,000 people from 1,200 households to participate in environmental protection.

The 61-year-old Zhu Shuojie was honored as a "Chinese Moral Model”. You can find him at different places in Rucheng County such as rivers, sewage outlets, drinking water sources, fields, and bazaars. At the end of 2014, he was hired as a “Green Guardian” to protect Xiangjiang in Hunan Province. In recent years, he has led volunteers in various activities such as the “Observing Xiangjiang”, “Environmental Record” and “Green Communication”.

While in junior high school, Zeng Chenxi, along with 6 Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) members, established a Xiangjiang Protection Organization. She walked more than 6,000 km along the Xiangjiang River over three summer vacations. During that period, she wrote 30,000 words in special investigation report and diaries. Later, she publicized Xiangjiang protection knowledge in communities and schools. Zeng won the 8th "Mother River Award in China" and the title of China's Most Beautiful Middle School Moral Student 2018.

Over the past 21 years, Tan Dunshuang, as an obligatory bird guard, has been patrolling the mountain almost every day. At his own expense, he has written slogans encouraging the preservation and protection of birds at mountainside and intersections. Thanks to his efforts, local awareness of bird protection is increasing, and the environment is improving. Each year, as many as 50,000 migratory birds pass through the town.

As a "Green Guardian" to protect the Xiangjiang, Zhang Jianwei has successfully planned and implemented the "Xiangjiang River Basin Environmental-friendly Water-rafting", "Liuyang River Basin Environmental-friendly Water-rafting" and "Bird's-Eye Views of Dongting Lake, Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanjiang and Lishui Rivers" Green Guardian Recorders in Action. Zhang took many pictures and videos that call on people from all walks of life to care for water resources protection.
