“China and Madagascar have long-term cooperation history. During the 47 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries have collaborated in many fields such as infrastructure, energy and agriculture. They have made great achievements,” said Lovatina Gontare Ramaroson, office director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAEP) of Madagascar in an interviewed recently.

Madagascar is an island nation in East Africa. Located in the heart of the western Indian Ocean and the eastern African waterway, it is an important bridge and link between China and Africa. The MAEP official remarked that Hunan is an agricultural powerhouse, and Madagascar attaches great importance to cooperating with Hunan, especially in hybrid rice cultivation. She added, “The Chinese government has successfully helped Madagascar's hybrid rice planting. The hybrid rice is growing very well. Hunan and Madagascar have huge cooperation space in the future.”

Madagascar boasts the largest area of hybrid rice cultivation and the highest yield in Africa, and its average yield is more than double that of other local varieties. It is worth mentioning that Madagascar once selected rice as a new currency pattern. When talking about Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, Lovatina looked excited, “He is very famous in Madagascar. I really hope to meet with Mr. Yuan Longping! I hope that China and Madagascar can further cooperate in hybrid rice.”

She was very grateful to the Chinese government and the Hunan government for organizing the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE). She noted, “I am very proud to participate in CAETE on behalf of my country and people. I believe China-Madagascar friendly and mutually beneficial partnership will achieve more fruitful results through this expo.”

This was also Lovatina’s first visit to Changsha. She spoke highly of the city, “I especially enjoyed my trip to Hunan. Changsha is an ancient and modern city. It is very attractive.”
