Hunan people still enjoyed quality life despite the pandemic. Hunan consumed more and more overseas products, such as flowers from Kenya, Boston lobster from Canada, diapers from Japan, and skin care products from Europe. According to customs statistics, between January and February, Hunan’s imported consumer goods amounted to 3.62 billion CNY, which has doubled over the same period of last year. Of which, Hunan imported 1.73 billion CNY consumer goods in February, an increase of 220%.

The customs statistics showed that in the first two months, Japan and New Zealand were the largest trading partners for consumer goods imports in Hunan. More than half of imported consumer goods were from APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) countries. Hunan imported 550 million CNY of consumer goods from Japan, an increase of 5.5% and accounting for 15.2% of the total; and 530 million CNY from New Zealand, an increase of 160% and accounting for 14.6% of the total. The consumer goods imported from the APEC countries was worth 2.37 billion CNY, grew by 73.5% and accounting for 65.4% of the total.

Food, tobacco, and alcohol were the largest import value commodities, and imports of clothing and daily chemical products increased significantly. Between January and February, Hunan imported 2.57 billion CNY of food, tobacco, and alcohol consumer goods, up 150% and accounting for 71.1% of the total. The imported meat was 1.24 billion CNY, an increase of 800%, and aquatic products 480 million CNY, grew by 110%. The imported consumer goods such as clothing, shoes, and hats amounted to 140 million CNY, surging 810%. The imported consumer goods of daily chemical products reached 240 million CNY, rose by 780%.

The cross-border e-commerce platforms kept expanding. In recent years, China has continued to expand the scope of cross-border e-commerce demonstration. Changsha and Yueyang were approved to set up comprehensive cross-border e-commerce pilot zones, which has a significant driving effect on imported consumer goods. Earlier this year, Hengyang and Yueyang were included in the cross-border e-commerce retail import demonstration list, and Hunan’s cross-border e-commerce has entered a golden period of rapid development. It was learned that, since the cross-border e-commerce enterprises in the Huanghua Comprehensive Bonded Zone resumed work and production after the Spring Festival, the average daily sales volume and value have exceeded the average daily level in 2019.

Changsha Customs reminds relevant enterprises to make good use of the customs innovative policies in the cross-border e-commerce comprehensive demonstration zones; seize the opportunity to reduce taxes on consumer goods; and, stimulate consumption potential via imported consumer goods with abundant supplies, quality assurance, preferential prices, and exotic features.
