A national shadow puppet performance event kicked off in Changsha on the evening of December 15, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA).

The performance event is sponsored by the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the China Puppetry and Shadow Arts Association, and UNIMA China. Sixteen domestic professional puppet troupes and folk teams from provinces and cities like Guangdong, Shanghai, Wuhan, Yangzhou, and Hunan will stage 21 shadow puppet performances, including rod puppets, marionettes or string puppets, glove (hand) puppets, shadow play and other artistic varieties of different styles and genres.

The shadow puppet performances have rich themes and distinctive features. They include classic traditional plays and new stories that combine education with entertainment. For example, the shadow play “Mermaid Girl” performed at the opening ceremony is a Chinese adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Mermaid”. It swept all the awards in this year’s top domestic competitions. The large musical puppet show “Crested Ibis” is integrated with traditional folk arts full of Shaanxi elements such as puppets and shadow puppets. The puppet show “Fan Po Nong” inherits the traditional skills of grove puppetry featuring “one person manipulates two puppets simultaneously”. It tells a well-known traditional love story in southern Fujian Province through vibrant singing and dancing performances.

The performance event will last until December 20. All the performances are free. People who are interested can follow the WeChat account of the Hunan Puppet and Shadow Art Protection and Inheritance Center [湖南省木偶皮影艺术保护传承中心] to learn more about the performances and apply for tickets.
