May 12 is the 11th National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day. This year the theme is “Improving disaster prevention and control capabilities to build a life safety line”. The Hunan Provincial Disaster Reduction Committee Office, Hunan Provincial Emergency Management Department, Changsha Municipal Disaster Reduction Committee, and other concerned units held a joint publicity campaign on disaster prevention and mitigation at the Runlong Community Pioneer Square, Yuelu District, Changsha City. Hunan Vice Governor Chen Fei attended.
The disaster prevention and mitigation knowledge publicity and drill activities were held on site. They included: high-rise elevator residential fire emergency evacuation drills; emergency rescue team image display;an example of an emergency rescue; a demonstration of comprehensive disaster relief; and disaster reduction works. These were intended to widely publicize knowledge and skills such as fire rescue, earthquake prevention, disaster relief, wind and lightning protection, and health, epidemic and accident prevention.
The Hunan Provincial Disaster Reduction Committee Office and the Hunan Provincial Emergency Management Department emphasized that disaster reduction committees and their units at all levels should be prepared to cope with all possibilities, and to ensure that everything and everyone is safe.
Engineering, material, team, plans, and publicity should all be in place and ready to effectively strengthen disaster risk prevention awareness. All relevant departments at all levels are to perform the main responsibility of natural disaster prevention and control, and grasp the disaster prevention and control work in the local and industrial areas to prevent risks from becoming disasters and prevent small incident from becoming a catastrophe. All grassroots units should mobilize community residents, volunteers, and social organizations to focus on hidden dangers and risk investigation, regularly organize emergency escape and risk drills, and open up the “last mile” channel of disaster prevention and mitigation. We should work together to build a solid defense line for the safety of people's lives and property, they added.
