The pace of Hunan culture “going global” has accelerated. The Changsha Customs announced on June 18, 2019 that between January and May, Hunan exported cultural products of 8.05 billion CNY, an increase of 72.9% from the same period last year, accounting for 8.2% of the province's total value of exports. Cultural products exports continued to grow. Changsha ranked first in Hunan in this regard. Its cultural products exports reached 4.2 billion CNY, an increase of 220% and accounting for 52.1%.

In the first five months of this year, Hunan cultural products exports all achieved year-on-year growth, with monthly exports exceeding 1 billion CNY. Cultural products exports exceeded 2 billion CNY in January and May. Hong Kong and the USA are Hunan’s major exporters. Hunan’s cultural exports to Hong Kong was 2.35 billion CNY, an increase of 26.4% and accounting for nearly 30% of the total; that to the USA was 1.48 billion CNY, an increase of 20.4%.

Changsha Customs statistics show that toys; jewelry and related objects; entertainment products; flower and paintings-themed handicrafts; and sculpture handicrafts are the main export products. From January to May, Hunan exported 2.4 billion CNY of toys, an increase of 250%; 1.75 billion CNY of jewelry and related objects, up 8.5%; and 1.16 billion CNY of fireworks and firecrackers, accounting for 14.4% of the provincial total.

Why does Hunan's exports of cultural products maintain rapid growth? “Hunan cultural industry has promoted the unique Hunan culture to the world, and injected impetus to the sustained development of Hunan cultural products exports,” said a Changsha Customs staff. He added that the cultural exports growth was partially attributed to the following efforts:
-Hunan Cultural Tourism Week was held in American countries such as Cuba and Mexico in November 2018;
-A total of 12 intangible cultural heritage items like Xiang embroidery, dark tea, and Liling under-glazed porcelain were promoted in American countries and attracted much attention; and,
-The 15th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair became a new channel for spreading Hunan culture to the world.

In 2018, Changsha was approved as one of the first 13 national cultural export bases. Hunan cultural and creative industries added value exceeded more than 225 billion CNY in 2018, accounting for 6.2% of the provincial GDP. It ranked first in central China and was among the top in central and western China.
