Wen Huazhi was born in 1982 in south China's Hunan Province. After graduating from senior high school she began working as a tour guide.

One fateful day in August 2005, her tour bus crashed into a coal truck on a remote highway, instantly killing the driver and Wen's fellow tour guide. The passengers were trapped in the mangled wreckage of the bus for hours waiting for help to arrive. Although Wen's leg was badly broken, the bone jutting out through her skin, the injured passengers were her main concern. She insisted on staying on the bus to comfort them and was the last one to be taken to hospital. The seriousness of her injuries and sustained blood loss necessitated amputating her left leg. Six years later, Wen has an artificial leg and plans to carry on working as tour guide. She has fulfilled her dream of studying at university and is a deputy to the National People's Congress. Wen responds to the nationwide commendation of her bravery by saying that she did only what needed to be done, and that she will carry on doing her best to serve society.
