Wishal: Labor Day

Labor Day is an annual holiday celebrated all over the world, popularly known as May Day and International Workers’ Day.  Its origins can be traced back in the labor union movement where the eight-hour day movement was advocated which highlights eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

This day celebrates the economic and social achievements of hard working employees.  The holiday today has become internationalized and several countries celebrate it with multi-day celebrations filled with parades, shows and various other labor-oriented events. In Northern Europe, Walpurgis Night is celebrated on the preceding night which is merged with the Labor Day in some countries.

Most countries such as Albania, Argentina, Aruba, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, China, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar , Nigeria, North Korea, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, the Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Sweden, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, celebrate it on May 1 with a national holiday.

However in Slovenia, Serbia and Ukraine, Labor Day falls on May 2 and in Poland, it is called State Holiday and is still celebrated on May 1.
