It was close to the Chinese new year when we arrived there. Making Ciba (a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice) is a major activity of both men and women in Huangxikou street. In such a remote and isolated small town, to slaughter a pig for the Spring Festival, be it small or big, is such a significant event as to arouse people’s discussion.

To the west of Chenxi County is Maoyang Miao Nationality Autonomous County. Jinhe Town in the south of the county town is the economic, trade, transportation and cultural center of Maoyang Miao Nationality Autonomous County, and goods distribution center of the seven townships and towns in the neighboring two provinces of Hunan and Guizhou. Jinhe Town has a long history and was first established in 1073. The well preserved natural sceneries and cultural relics along with modern civilization quietly tell the stories and fashions of the ancient town.
