China-Russia Free Combat Match Kicks off in Changsha

China-Russia Free Combat Match, the last international martial arts (Wushu) competition held in China in 2012, was kicked off in Changsha, Hunan on the evening of December 22. Chinese team made a clean sweep in seven duels and was crowned "The King of Kungfu". (Free Combat: Sanda in Chinese, similar to Kickboxing or Muay Thai, but including many more grappling techniques)
 
Hosted by the Wushu Sports Administrative Center of State General Administration of Sports and undertook by the Hunan Provincial Sports Bureau, the match applied the newest international competition rules for Wushu free combat and was conducted on the international standard boxing ring. The competitors were all professional and outstanding. Chinese players were selected form the national team, including such famous players as Zhang Kaiyin, Bai Jinbin and Wang Fangkun. Russian players were masters chosen by Russian Wushu Free Combat Association and were all titled as Russian champions of free combat. This match should be the highest level of competition in China-Russia free combat.   
   
The most attractive contest was the one between Zhang Kaiyin from China and Zakharov Valeri from Russia at 75 kilograms level. Being in the driving seat at the beginning, Zhang Kaiyin finally won a landslide victory. This was Zhang Kaiyin's another international competition after he knocked out Thiland King of Boxer Lamsongkram in China-Thailand Boxing Duel Meet in 2009.

Over 100 Overseas Chinese Scholars Look Forward to Working in Changsha

The 15th Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology was closed at the China Import and Export Fair Complex on December 21, 2012. A promotion meeting of introducing the international high-end talents and advanced applicable technologies lasting several days, which was organized by Changsha--a co-host city of the convention, appealed to overseas Chinese professionals from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and other countries. After talks, more than 100 overseas Chinese professionals reached the initial intention of working and starting business in Changsha.

"I often feel homesick when studying abroad. I feel myself at Orange Isle as I see the portrait of Mao Zedong in his youth at Changsha pavilion," said an overseas Chinese scholar.

By 2020, Changsha will realize the introduction of 100 groups led by outstanding science and technology professionals and of 500 top science and technology talents to lead the development of major industries.

2012 Winter Camp (HNU) for Overseas Chinese Teenagers Inaugurated

The opening ceremony of the 2012 Winter Camp for Overseas Chinese Teenagers & Back to China Trip was unveiled at the Zhishan Hall in Hunan Normal University (HNU).

On behalf of the university, President of HNU Jiang Hongxin extended warm welcome to nearly 300 overseas Chinese teenagers and team leaders from Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Mauritius and expressed greetings to the working staff and volunteers. He hoped that this trip could be a trip of learning, root seeking and friendship leading to great harvest.
 
President Jiang noted that HNU will proactively explore innovative approaches, integrate the university's resources as a normal school and give full play to regional advantages in a bid to serve overseas Chinese and to develop it into a Chinese language education base that values quality, service and characteristics.

Representatives from team leaders and camp members made speeches at the ceremony, expressing appreciation of being back to their motherland China and anticipation to their stay and study in Hunan.

This winter camp will be the largest one of its kind organized by HNU. It is the first time that the university receives participants from Australia and Mauritius.

Changsha Tops Central China in 2012 Best Cities for Business

The 2012 Forbes China Forum of City Investment and Development for Business & Award Ceremony for 2012 Best Cities for Business was held with grand ceremony on December 12th. Mayor of Changsha and Deputy Secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Committee Zhang Jianfei, Li Zaiyong of Guiyang, Hu Weilin of Xiangtan, Sheng Ronghua of Yueyang, Wang Qun of Zhuzhou, Ouyang Weimin of Guangzhou and Yu Donglai of Hangzhou attended the awards ceremony.
 
Hunan has made an impressive showing in the "Best Cities for Business" charts. Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, ranks 16th in the whole nation, topping cities in central China for three consecutive years. Three other cities listed are Zhuzhou, No. 72, Yueyang, No.79, and Xiangtan, No.87. According to the number and ranking of "Best Cities" in the province, Hunan ranks 6th among all the other provinces in China.

Herbalife's First Global Raw Material Processing Base Opens in Hunan

Herbalife Leishuo (Hunan) Natural Products Co., Ltd. declared its opening in Changsha County on December 11. Herbalife International, the world's leading nutrition company, invested 10 million USD into its first global raw material processing base. The new plant boasts an annual production capacity of 1,000 tons of plant extracts supplied to subsidiaries in 73 countries and regions, with an average annual sales income expected to hit 238 million yuan.    

Michael O. Johnson, Herbalife's board chairman and chief executive officer, led 32 headquarter executives and chief inspectors from different regional markets around the world to the opening ceremony. Xiao Yayu, deputy director of the Standing Committee of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Michael O. Johnson were both in good spirits and stood proud of their joint achievement.  
 
In 2009, Herbalife International expressed its interest in cooperation with Leishuo (Changsha) Pharmaceutical and Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd in the supply of raw materials for natural products. The two parties finally reached a preliminary agreement this past February on the launch of a natural products joint venture in Changsha. The new base will make Changsha the most prominent site on Herbalife's global business network map. Besides the increase of more than 200 job opportunities, the company is expected to boost the local plantation industry, especially tea farming, and drive regional economic development.

Final Version of Hunan Spirit Released

The Internet Information Office of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee released the key words of Hunan Spirit at the press conference on December 11. The Hunan Spirit is condensed into Zhongcheng (loyalty), Dandang (sense of responsibility), Qiushi (seeking truth from facts), and Tuqiang (striving for prosperity). The provincial spirit extracted from mass proposals got nod from the Standing Committee of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee. 

Hunan Spirit has broad and profound connotation with loyalty as the gist, sense of responsibility the trait, seeking truth from facts the essence and striving for prosperity the pursuit of Hunan people. 

Zhang Zhichu, deputy director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee said, "The final version of the provincial spirit manifests people's love and good wishes to the province. In response to the requirements of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, we must conscientiously learn and implement the spirits of the 18th National Congress of the CPC and vigorously promote Hunan Spirit. We should also actively nurture and practice core values of socialism to drive the construction of four modernizations (new industrialization, agricultural modernization, urbanization and informatization) and "Two-Oriented" Society, the promotion of the province's prosperity and people's well-being and the building of a moderately prosperous society in all aspects."

First Biannual Fenghuang International Photography Exhibition Rocks the Ancient Town

The first biannual Fenghuang International Photography Exhibition kicked off on December 18, 2012. This year's event, themed "Folk Customs and Coming Home", will showcase nearly 200 outstanding photographic pieces from home and abroad. The expo will be open to visitors until the 22nd.
 
This year, the "Folk Customs and Coming Home" event seeks to serve as a platform to raise awareness of ethnic customs, to give show to current cultural heritage projects and the richness of the local humanities, and to stimulate photography and the arts in order to give greater expression to and provide deeper insight into the local customs of western Hunan. Executive Vice Governor of Hunan Province Yu Laishan met in Changsha with international delegates to the project negotiation conference with international specialist organizations on December 7.
 
A total of twenty-four international economic and technological expert organizations in the fields of science, environmental protection and electronics have been invited to the negotiation conference. The conference is to introduce the demands of international experts, to facilitate a sound relationship between Hunan's public institutions and enterprises and the international expert organizations, and to help bring in experts and technologies in urgent need.
 
Yu hoped that the participating experts can help establish a long term cooperative partnership between Hunan's enterprises and the international specialist organizations as well as transnational corporations. Hunan Focuses on Culture-Export Enterprises and Projects Development

The Press Conference on Hunan's Cultural Export Policy & Hong Kong-Hunan Cultural and Creative Industry Cooperation & Exchange Conference was held in Changsha on December 4. During the conference, 18 key culture-export enterprises and projects were conferred plates and they can enjoy the newly-released preferential policies accordingly.

The Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and the Department of Commerce of Hunan Province jointly issued "Opinions on Supporting the Export of Cultural Products and Service", which is divided into three parts with 12 articles.

The document focuses on supporting industries with comparative advantage and nationwide influence and the export of their derivative products, like broadcasting & TV, new media, publishing & printing, animation game, entertainment, cultural and creative crafts and arts, so as to spread Huxiang culture abroad.

The enterprises included in the key enterprise list can enjoy preferential policies in terms of departure and entry, settlement of exchange, customs clearance, financial service and tax preference.

In addition, Hunan Province will formulate and promulgate the "Catalogue for the Guidance of the Export of Cultural Products and Service of Hunan" once every two years.

2012 Central China (Hunan) International Agricultural Expo Closed

The 2012 Central China (Hunan) International Agricultural Expo came to an end on Nov. 24. According to statistics, the expo attracted nearly 1 million visitors with total transaction volume reaching 16.2 billion yuan.
 
Changsha delegation consisting of 52 enterprises exhibited more than 3,500 kinds of products during the expo, attracting a lot of large purchasers, suppliers and franchisees to negotiate and talk over. At the summarizing and commending meeting, 129 products won the gold prize, 10 products most marketable award, 18 participants the organizational award including 14 prizes for the best organization and 4 for outstanding organization. Thirty-one varieties of products of the Changsha delegation received the gold prize.
 
The expo highlighted the prominent achievement of agricultural and rural reforms in central China of this year, becoming the carrier for market joint, business cooperation, corporation exchange and agricultural development. Many brand name products gathered in the large-scale expo, bringing it with numerous visitors and active trading. Nearly 1,000 varieties among over 8,100 displayed products are green food. During the week-long event, the exhibition attendance reached to about 1 million with more than 100,000 visitors a day.

Zhang Yinglong, deputy secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Committee, met a four-member delegation led by Mr. Stephen Philips, president of the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), at noon of November 23.
 
Deputy Secretary Zhang briefed the guests on Changsha's basic conditions. He remarked that Changsha and Britain have maintained close cooperation in such sectors as trade, investment, and sustainable development, yielding many fruits. The CBBC plans to open a branch in Changsha, which will be of great significance to promote trade ties, and the economic and trade exchange and cooperation between Changsha and Britain. Mr. Stephen Philips introduced the CBBC. He said that Britain has advanced concepts and technologies in urban sustainable development, and Changsha with its own advantages can share complementariness with British enterprises. Changsha Flaunts Its Beauty to Impress Ambassadors from Various Countries

"Changsha is a very beautiful place with rapid economic development. I hope to make my due contributions to promoting cooperation between Hunan and Thailand." as stated by Thailand's deputy consul general in Kunming. She recalled that she had invited two reporters from Hunan TV to experience local folk culture in Thailand two years ago so as to enhance understanding of her country. Recently, Li Ning, secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Hunan Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese (HFROC) led a delegation to Dalian of Liaoning Province for inspection. The delegation was received by Shen Lirong, chairperson of the Dalian Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese (DFROC).

Hunan's "Harmony Twin Vases" Win Golden Prize at International Ceramic Fair

It was released on the Art Ceramic Auction Works Grand Prix of the 2012 China Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair that the "Harmony Twin Vases" from Hunan won the golden prize. It is the first win of Hunan art ceramic.

Lead developer of the twin vases is Mr. Chen Jianming from Changsha Hongyu Kiln Ceramics Factory. Several classical ceramics crafts such as Chinese red, gold emboss, blue and white, color enamel and under-glazed five colors were applied to the 50-centimeter-high vases. The prominent technique and elaborated sculpture with an integration of Chinese and Western elements on the vases achieved a perfect combination of high-grade manufacture technique and rich artistic content, representing good fortune and happiness as well as the harmony among the 56 ethnic groups in China.

In 2010, the twin vases were sold at a whopping price of 3.18 million yuan at the auction held at Shanghai World Exposition, hitting a peak high transaction price in the history of red porcelain products in China.

Construction Starts on Changsha Meixi Lake International Culture and Art Center

 
The construction of Meixi Lake International Culture and Art Center, witha total investment of close to two billion yuan was launched on October 26 at Changsha Meixi Lake International Service Zone. Zhou Qiang, secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee announced its official commencement.
 
The petal-shaped architecture was designed by Zaha Hadid Architectual Firm of Britain, winner of the world's highest award in architecture field Pritzker Architecture Prize.   
 
The center covers an area of 100 thousand square meters and the floorage totaled 120 thousand square meters, consisting of a big first-rate theater with 1,800 seats, a small theater with 500 seats and an art gallery of 25,000 square meters. Upon its completion in 2015, the center is expected to host high art performance such as world top grand opera, dance drama and symphony, with an annual reception capacity of 250 performances for accommodation of approximately 310 thousand audiences.

"China-Nepal Paintings Exhibition"-Beauty of the Two Countries Mesmerizes Zhuzhou

Hunan Unveils Public Memorial Ceremony to Commemorate Emperor Shun

On September 28, the third public memorial ceremony to commemorate Emperor Shun was held in Jiuyi Mountain where Emperor Shun was buried, in Ningyuan County of Yongzhou City, Hunan Province.
    
At 8:58 a.m., the ceremony started with 9 gun salutes, 9 hits on gongs, and 34 beats of drums. Sixteen worshipers sacrificed livestock, grain and fruits to the Emperor Shun to show their respect. The officiant, Governor Xu Shousheng, had his hands washed, worshiped Emperor Shun with incense and wine. He then read out the worship oration "To the Emperor" after all the worshipers bowed three times.
    
As the Shao Music started, the 3-movement dance of worshiping unveiled, including "To Attract Phoenix with Flute", "To Eulogize Fortune Cloud", and "The South Wind".

20 Foreign Experts Win Xiaoxiang Friendship Award

On the morning of September 25, the Hunan Provincial People's Government held a National Day banquet in Changsha in honor of the foreign experts working in the province. Renewable Energy Introduced in Changsha's Rural Regions

The energy used in rural areas has evolved from firewood to honeycomb briquette and liquefied gas. However convenient these energies are, they pose threats to the environment.

Changsha County initiated the methane-solar-energy project to promote utilization of renewable energy in rural areas. 17 renewable energy service centers are set up in towns and townships and 143 service outlets are established in villages. Delegation from Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Japan Visits Changde

A delegation of top leaders from overseas Chinese media arrived in Changsha on August 19, starting their week-long tour in Hunan.

The participation of over 30 overseas Chinese media from 21 countries including U.S.A, Canada, and France, makes it the biggest themed foreign publicity event in Hunan's history.

China-developed C919 Large Passenger Airliner to Enter Market in 2016

Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee Zhou Qiang, Governor of Hunan Province Xu Shousheng and President of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd. (COMAC) attended the foundation-laying ceremony for Honeywell Boyun Aviation System (Hunan) Co., Ltd. on August 8.
   
Mr. Jin revealed that the China-developed C919 large passenger airliner aims to make its first flight in 2014 and, after fulfilling relevant industry standards, will enter the market in 2016. Plane orders have increased to 280 units at present. The formal foundation-laying ceremony shows that new firm steps have been taken toward the development work of C919 landing gear turbine, tire and brake systems.
   
An agreement signed in 2010 gave rights to the company jointly established by Honeywell Aerospace Group in America and Hunan Boyun New Material Co., Ltd. / Changsha Xinhang Limited Company as the sole supplier of the C919 wheel and brake systems.
   
President of Honeywell Aerospace Group Ma Tianming said the cooperation between the two companies will offer the C919 the world's most advanced carbon brake technology, which indicates that China's large passenger airliner project has taken solid strides.

Friendly Exchanges Between Zhangjiajie and South Korea

Zhangjiajie Mayor Zhao Xiaoming met a delegation led by Pak Chong-ryul, president of the Association of Korean Journalists on the evening of June 29, 2012.

Mayor Zhao jubilantly shared with the South Korean journalists the exchanges and funny stories between Zhangjiajie and South Korea in the past decade.

Pak Chong-ryul remarked that Zhangjiajie is very popular in Korea and there is no one but knows it. Former President of the Korean Tourism Organization got the "Special Contribution Award for Zhangjiajie's Development" for his efforts in promoting the city.

The Name Card Room of Korea, which is called the China-Korea Friendship Pavilion, is a must-see place for any Korean tourist who comes to Yuanjiajie Scenic Area. The pavilion was designed by Yang Yongjun, a native of Zhangjiajie. A couple from Chaoxian (Korean) nationality of China have been invited to the pavilion to introduce Zhangjiajie's natural scenery to tourists. Korean tourists often initiatively leave their name cards and take photos as commemoration.

Two languages--Chinese and Korean are used everywhere in Zhangjiajie's scenic spots. It was here that the earliest direct exchange of RMB and KRW was carried out. Guides, hotel attendants, and the locals all can speak Korean.

Mayor Zhao said that since 2002 Zhangjiajie has sent the government delegation to visit South Korea each year. Friendly ties have been established between Zhangjiajie and Hadong County. Korean art groups have performed many times in Zhangjiajie, and many Koreans have settled here.

The 4th Changsha Azalea Festival Opens on Daiwei Mountain

On May 10th, the 4th Changsha Azalea Tourism & Cultural Festival was unveiled on Dawei Mountain in Liuyang City. It was rainy and the peak of the Dawei Mounatain was shrouded in mist and cloud. Zhangjiajie to Hold China-Japan Youth Cultural Exchange Concert

The China-Japan Youth Cultural Exchange Concert will be held at the Hallelujah Concert Hall in Zhangjiajie's Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) Cave tourist area on March 26.

Artifacts from Han Dynasty Unearthed in Anren County

Burial Objects in the Tomb
Noon of Feb. 19, villagers in Ruanshan of Yangji Town discovered an ancient brick tomb at a construction site. On receiving a call from the villagers, officials from Anren Relics Research Institution rushed to the scene. On further exploration, they learned that the exposed arched entrance of the tomb was 2.5 meters high and 3.7m long. The tomb is believed to be originated from the Han Dynasty. Salvage archeology was immediately carried out. A total of 9 whole potteries from Han Dynasty have been unearthed so far, including terrines, bins, stoves, and rice steamers. This discovery provides new data which can help the study of Han Dynasty in Anren County.
