Hunan was recently approved for its nine new national exported food and agricultural product quality and safety demonstration zones, the most among all provinces. Yongzhou becomes the fourth national exported food and agricultural product quality and safety demonstration city, and the first in south China. Hence, Hunan presents its landmark achievements in upgrading agricultural industry and expanding agricultural product exports.

The nine newly added national demonstration zones are in Yongzhou City, Qiyang County, Dong’an County, Lingling District, Xiangtan County, Qidong County, Jingzhou County, Guzhang County, and Huayuan County. The products include fresh vegetables and fruit cans, tea, live pigs, plant extract, lotus seeds, poria cocos, and meat.

As of now, Hunan has 21 national exported food and agricultural product quality and safety demonstration zones, and nine provincial export demonstration zones under construction.

Hunan has engaged in developing export demonstration areas for seven years, which gives an impetus to food and agricultural product exports, Hunan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau Director Yang Jie said. Data shows that Hunan’s food and agricultural product exports increased from 486 million USD in 2009 to 1.375 billion USD in 2016. During the first eight months this year, the amount of exports reached 680 million USD, up 11.2% year on year. Exports via the demonstration areas accounted for 60% of the total.

The export demonstration area development also promotes poverty alleviation. So far, 10 national and provincial poverty-stricken counties in Hunan have established export demonstration zones; and, 25 national and provincial poverty-stricken counties have exported their food and agricultural products.
