CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd., on May 14, announced that its subsidiary Times Electric Co., Ltd. won an Indian order of 8-inch IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) for 100 locomotives. These IGBTs were independently developed by Times Electric. This is the first foreign order for Chinese indigenous IGBT products.

For years, the high-power IGBT chips were produced by foreign manufacturers. In 2014 Times Electric completed its own 8-inch IGBT production line, China’s first and the world’s second of its kind. The company is presently the only Chinese supplier of IGBT chips, modules, and components, and their application technology.

CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, a leading rail transit equipment manufacturer, has been exploring global market through joint venture, cross-border merges and acquisitions, and localized investment, said General Manager Ding Rongjun.

In 2013, it completed its first African order of electric locomotive for South Africa. In 2014, it purchased BOGE Rubber & Plastic, a global leader in rubber-metal and plastics technology. In 2016, it passed the joint examination of CTCI Corporation (Taiwan) and Singapore Ministry of Transport for railway absorber products, and won an order of 20,000 absorbers for Singapore’s Thomson MRT Line. Presently, it has ten overseas subsidiaries. Its foreign business accounts for 24% of its total. Its products were sold to more than 30 countries and regions. The foreign sales exceeded 7.6 billion yuan.

It has accomplished the acquisition of Dynex Semiconductor (UK), BOGE (Germany), E+M (Germany), SMD (UK), and Delkor (Australia), and established four R&D centers in UK and USA. It conducted international exchanges and cooperation with well-known universities and enterprises worldwide, such as University of Sheffield, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and Ruhr-University Bochum.
