Yueyang, previously called Baling, was also known as Yuezhou. Situated in the northeast of Hunan Province, it is adjacent to Hubei and Jiangxi Provinces. It has under its jurisdiction 2 county-level cities, 4 counties, 3 urban districts, Yueyang Economy and technology Developing Zone, Nanhu Scenic Spot and Quyuan Administrative Region. Yueyang covers a total area of 15,000 square kilometers, of which the city proper is 824 square kilometers, and has a population of 5.3 million with 950,000 urban residents. Its economic strength ranks second in Hunan Province, immediately after the capital city Changsha.

Yueyang is the only riverside city in Hunan. As another "Golden Cross" in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River besides Wuhan (Hubei),Yueyang lies on the conjunction of 1 lake (Dongting Lake),2 plains (Jianghan Plain and Dongting Lake Plain), 3 provinces ( Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi) and 4 roads (Jing-Guang Railroad, the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, 107 State Road and the Yangtze River). In addition to the traffic opening of Dongting Lake Bridge, Yueyang constitutes a convenient traffic network "linking West and East" and "transfixion between North and South".

Yueyang has long been known as a base of natural resources. It owns a water surface of 5.42 million mu, and stands as No.1 in all Hunan in terms of water quantity. It contains more than 60 kinds of mineral deposits, especially rich reserves of rare metals and non-metallic minerals among which Monazite is No.1 in the nation.

Yueyang is a prosperously new-emerging industrial city. Among a total of more than 2,000 industrial enterprises within the city, the large- and medium-sized ones reach over 90.6% major industrial pillars. Especially, chemical engineering, architectural materials, refrigeration, paper, feedstuff and medicine production have been developed.

Yueyang boasts both a long history and splendid culture. Qu Yuan, the great patriotic poet in the late Warring State period, chose Miluo River which lies right in the city as his final resting place. The "master poet" of the Chinese history, Du Fu, described the most famous attraction of this city -- Yueyang Tower, in his famous poem "Climbing Yueyang Tower". Many other well-known poets from different generations, such as Li Bai, Han Yu, Bai Juyi, Meng Haoran, Lu You, Ouyang Xiu, have successively visited Yueyang and left behind many touching articles. Fan Zhongyan, the talented poet of the Song Dynasty, pushed the glorification of Tower Yueyang to a climax with his unprecedented remarkable work "On Tower Yueyang". A number of moving legends and stories, such as two concubines' crying over emperor Shun and the love legend of Liuyi between human and ghost, give this land supernatural and secret charm.

Yueyang is a tourist and cultural city of national renown. Here are located the wide and gorgeous Dongting Lake, Tower Yueyang of long-flung and eternal fame, the fairy lake island Junshan, the Former Site of Pingjiang Uprising led by the patriotic marshal Peng Dehuai, the Former Residence of great communist Ren Bishi and other memorable places of revolution. All in all, this city is a cluster of green mountains, blue water, renowned towers, celebrities and excellent articles.

With the development and opening up policy, the economy and social development of Yueyang City has driven it to the "fast lane". It has been successively designated by the government as a pilot city for comprehensive reform, a pilot city of capital optimization, and awarded the National Advanced City Of Civilization, the Advanced City Promoted By Science and Education, and the National Hygiene & Civilization City.
