Statistics of Hunan Province’s Economic and Social Development in 2010

In recent years, Hunan has witnessed great development in its total economic output. Its GDP hit 1,293.069 billion yuan in 2009, making an increase of 13.6 percent over the average and ranking tenth among the provinces of China. Economic returns have further improved. Fiscal revenue has increased by 14.5%, amounting to 1504.58 billion yuan in 2009. Thanks to the new pattern of industrialization, industrial structure has been accelerated forward. The top 5 industries making the highest contribution rate of industrial production, i.e. special equipment manufacturing industry, agricultural and sideline food processing industry, non-metallic mineral products manufacturing industry, chemical materials and chemical products manufacturing industry and transportation equipment manufacturing industry, respectively increased by 37.1%, 28.7%, 29.8, 16.8% and 33.4%. 


Hunan has also achieved great success in the process of modernizing its agriculture. Grain production has increased for six consecutive years, reaching an annual output of 30 billion kilograms, up 3.5% over the previous year. The output of major crops including grain, cotton, oil-seeds, ramie and tobacco, as well as pork, beef and lamb, ranks among the highest in the country. Of these, its production of ramie is the highest in China, outbound sales of live pigs rank first in China, the province ranks fourth in flue-cured tobacco, and for many years it has been the country’s leading producer of rice. 


Hunan has developed its service industry, as well as commerce, logistics, tourism and cultural industries. In 2009, the number of inbound tourists reached 1.3087 million, an increase of 17.9%; foreign exchange earning from tourism amounted to US$ 673 million, up 9.0% over the previous year. The number of domestic tourists totaled 159.3416 million, an increase of 25.3%; and the revenue from domestic tourism reach 105.352 billion yuan, an increase of 30.3%. Total tourism income hit 109.947 billion yuan, an increase of 29.1% compared with the previous year. 


As for finance, Hunan's financial industry has been stable. By the end of 2009, the bank balance of all the financial institutions in Hunan hit 1402.545 billion yuan, an increase of 123.478 billion yuan over the beginning of the year. Various loans of all financial organizations throughout the whole province added up to 953.662 billion yuan, a record high, and 124.224 billion yuan higher than that of the previous year. The insurance industry has also developed fast. In 2009, the original insurance premiums totaled 34.845 billion yuan, an increase of 11.5%. 


At present, Hunan has established business relationships with 170 countries and regions, and has exploited over 3000 export commodities including more than 50 bulk commodities such as zinc, manganese, lead, antimony and non-ferrous metals, textiles, garments, chemicals, color display tubes, firecrackers and fireworks, ceramics, ferroalloy, steel, shoes and hats, rice, tea, vegetables, cases and bags, live pigs, and graphite, with the export volume exceeding 10 million dollars.
