[National Geographical Indication Products] Suining Cyclocarya Paliurus

Cyclocarya paliurus tea of Suining County was officially announced by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to be a National Geographical Indication Product in July 2016.

Cyclocarya paliurus, a native to eastern and central China, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Juglanaceae. It shows adaptations to all kinds of environment, especially wet valley and depressions. It is a deciduous tree growing to 30 m tall. The foliage is similar to Pterocarya, with pinnate leaves 20-25 cm long with five to eleven leaflets. The leaflets are 5-14 cm long and 2-6 cm broad. (wiki)

Wild cyclocarya paliurus grow on Suining's mountains at an altitude of more than 800 meters. The locals make it into tea drinks. Experimental research proved that the rich microelements in cyclocarya paliurus have a good performance in regulating blood sugar level.

Today, there are more than 1400 hectares of cyclocarya paliurus production bases, and 228 processing workshops. One enterprise has been awarded with official authorization for cyclocarya paliurus processing, and other three are applying.

The cyclocarya paliurus tea products has made annual production value of more than 100 million yuan, and sold to Japan, UK, South Korea, and Russia. Being listed as a national geographical indication product gives an impetus to the protection of this distinct product and the enhancement of its market competence. It therefore will further promote local economic development and increase farmers' income.
